National Measurement Laboratory
The National Measurement Laboratory (NML), hosted at LGC, serves as the UK’s Designated Institute for chemical and biological measurement. Funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the NML delivers measurement research provides reference materials, calibration services, specialised advice, and training. It plays a leading international role in standardising measurements, driving innovation, and supporting productivity and economic growth on behalf of the UK government.

The Grant Management Group (GMG) supports the effective delivery of publicly funded programmes, working closely with stakeholders to enhance scientific research and innovation. Commissioning and managing a portfolio of research awards, GMG provides oversight and expertise to ensure projects meet their goals, drive impact, and align with the UK’s strategic priorities in science and technology, fostering collaboration and advancing national and international research initiatives.

Under contract with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), LGC hosts and operates the UK’s Official Medicines Control Laboratory (OMCL) for chemical testing and the British Pharmacopoeia Commission Laboratory. The MHRA protects public health by ensuring that medicines and healthcare products are safe for those who use them. LGC investigates analytical methods, which are published as monographs (legally mandated standards) in the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) and manages a catalogue of around 900 chemical reference materials, known as British Pharmacopoeial Chemical Reference Substances (BPCRS) which support the BP.
